South Africa’s Western Cape is home to Spier Wine Farm whose origins go back to the 17th century. Their popular ranges include 21 Gables (Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and  Pinotage); Creative Block (an innovative range of blends); and Spier Signature (an ‘everyday premium’ selection, including a sparkling wine). Wine starts with the grape variety which shapes the taste or character. In order to appreciate wine, it is crucial to understand the characteristics of different grapes and how they are expressed in wines. While there are lots of grapes in the world, there are select few that are most recognisable for making fine wine.
