This week, some eleven foreign chambers gathered to showcase an impressive array of drinks in the stunning surrounds of The Drapers’ Hall in the City of London.
Championing international business
The 12th edition of this celebration of fine beers, wines and spirits, hosted by the Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce in the UK (CFCC), attracted an enthusiastic crowd on 12th April 2022. Some 200 attendees enjoyed the event hosted by the respected umbrella body of foreign chambers of commerce, known for being one of the leading voices for international business in Britain. It was formally incorporated in 2020 and today represents some 20+ foreign chambers in the UK, with members from all continents
Belgium was represented by Gordon Thompson, Sales Manager UK for Haacht, one of the largest breweries in a nation famed for its high quality beers. Beers being showcased included their classic Primus Pilsner and the IPA Super 8, a silver medal winner at the 2021 International Beer Challenge.
Nordic Spirit
Jakob Vallentin, founder of Nordic Gin House, brought the spirit of northern Europe to the occasion with a selection of gin infused with intriguing botanicals sourced in the countries producing the spirits range. The company, founded just four years ago, now exports to 30 countries.
The Nordic countries were also represented by Rupert Firbank, Regional Director Europe/Africa, for No. 1 Wines and Spirits from Sweden. The company, launched in 2007, now distils over 20 premium spirits. The distillery is located in the town of Vänersborg and uses the waters of Lake Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake, as its water source.
Representing Italy was the genial Loris Contro, UK Brand Ambassador for the Campari Group, who was introducing many attendees to their first experience of the bitter Italian aperitif Aperol. It is often said to taste like a mix of Campari and Prosecco.
SA sparkles with Benguela Cove
South Africa was showcasing the award-winning wines made by Johann Fourie of Benguela Cove. They were presented by Barry Anderson of Managing Director of Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate (UK) plus Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens. He was accompanied by Emma Hodges, Wine Experience and Sales Manager at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Cuvee 58 sparkling were all paired alongside fine chocolate plus savoury biltong (dried, cured beef) and Droëwors sausage.
Ice Wine brings Canadian Cheer
The final highlight from this evening of tempting tipples must be the Peller Riesling Icewine presented by Paul Milne, Territory Manager at Enotria&Coe. This Canadian dessert wine is made from naturally frozen Riesling grapes that are hand harvested at -10°C near Lake Ontario.
Among those present were Sharon Constançon, Chairman of both the CFCC and South African Chamber of Commerce in the UK, who said: “People moved around the tables, made sure their glasses were well filled and used the journey time between tables to network and meet old friends, new friends and share business opportunities.”
