The South African Chamber of Commerce’s Solidarity Walk is attracting high profile support for the international fundraiser that aims to show unity with the Rainbow Nation as it works to overcome the effects of the global pandemic.
Speaking during a SA Chamber webinar, the moderator Palesa Madumo, CEO of Vuma Reputation Management, encouraged everyone to make a collective effort to raise awareness for South Africa’s Solidarity Fund that is working to help those most affected by the pandemic: “As individuals we can all contribute to the Solidarity Fund and create change together.”
The Leeds United and Bafana Bafana legend Lucas Radebe reinforced the call for unity, saying: “It’s a great cause! Together we can defeat this pandemic. Work together. Nothing is impossible. Let’s make sure we make a difference.”
Andre Snyman, the acclaimed South African rugby union former player now living in the UK, encouraged diaspora South Africans and friends of the country to join the fun challenge: “This is a great opportunity to show people in South Africa we care. People want to get involved. People want to help. They want to walk! You don’t have to be South African to support the cause. My message is simply to get on board! Let’s get together. And together we are stronger.”
Earlier in the year, a talented line-up of inspiring South African vocalists blended their voices in a special version of ‘Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika to launch the awareness and fundraising drive. Singers included Karen Zoid, PJ Powers, Roxi Abbott, Nic Vani, Christian Heath, Russell Spence, Pearl Vani, Siyakha Tshayela, Queen Patience, Thandi Banjwa and Mick Burns.
The Solidarity Walk is a virtual sponsored walk of 2,414 miles from Cape Town to Beitbridge, on the border with Zimbabwe, and back again, to raise awareness and money for the South African Solidarity Fund.
Firms, community groups, families and sports teams can plan their own activites. People can also complete their mileage with a solo challenge on foot. Those staying at home can also their mileage in the garden or on a treadmill. Participants are reminded to check local public health guidelines when planning their activity.
It will take place over the UK Bank Holiday weekend of August 29th to August 31st inclusive. This is a one-off event that will not be repeated.
