The arrival of a popular wine range from South Africa’s west coast to Tanzania has been welcomed by diplomats, leading hospitality professionals and major retailers. Tanzania’s East Africa Quail and Wine Company (the importers) showcased Lutzville’s popular range of single grape varieties at a VIP reception where guests had the opportunity to meet Jaco van Niekerk, the vineyard’s senior wine maker.
Ten Lutzville wines were accompanied by gourmet hors d’oeuvre prepared by The Bay – the stunning venue for the evening. The evening began in the gardens of The Bay with a choice of wine from the vineyard’s Cape Diamond Collection (Sparkling Rose; Natural Sweet White; Natural Sweet Red; and Chenin Blanc). Brown’s (Kenya’s leading fine cheese producer) provided an impressive table of their produce to accompany the bottles: Mature Cheddar, Blu de Brun; Boccocino (buffalo mozzarella cheese); mixed herb soft cheese; garlic soft cheese; and goats cheese with peppercorn.
Chef Marc’s talented team were given the challenge of creating a menu that incorporated fine quail meat together with an impressive array of Brown’s cheese. The result was an exciting selection of pairings. They included: Quail egg and Smoked Sailfish canapé paired with Lutzville Sauvignon Blanc; Quail vol-au-vent paired with Lutzville Chardonnay; Brown’s Baked Camembert in Phyllo pastry paired with Lutzville Merlot; Spicy Beef Kebabs with Apple raita paired with Lutzville Pinotage; Quail Risotto with Brown’s Parmesan paired with Diamond Collection Shiraz; and Roast Quail stuffed with Chicken mousse paired with Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon.
My favourite wine of the evening was the full- bodied and complex yet supple Diamond Collection Cabernet Sauvignon for which Chef Mark created the most delicious dish of quail stuffed with chicken mousse and served with red wine, herb and quail stock sauce, gastronomy delight!
