Afternoon Tea at The Melody Restaurant, St Paul’s Hotel, London

The tradition of afternoon tea is alive and well in west London thanks to the brilliant staff at The Melody Restaurant located within the intriguing red-brick and terracotta Victorian school house that is now home to the St Paul’s Hotel.

There seems to be a plethora of places in London determined to see the British afternoon tea continue to enjoy a Renaissance as a quintessential custom well worth enjoying. The Great British Bake Off together with the rising profile of patisserie in various ways has certainly contributed to the endless array of venues offering that wonderful afternoon opportunity for some tea, treats and tranquillity from the constant rush of 21st century life – at least for many of us.

Harmonious dining

The Melody Restaurant is named after a film made in 1971 which featured various scenes filmed in St Paul’s School that was later converted into the present-day hotel. The film was initially released in the UK as ‘S.W.A.L.K.’ (Sealed with a Loving Kiss). It certainly appears the hard-working staff reflect their restaurant’s name as they appear to work in wonderful harmony to create fine meals in a beautiful space with imposing chandeliers and windows overlooking a tiny courtyard and a slither of greenery beyond. The courtyard runs off the Hammersmith Road through a Victorian wrought iron gate although patrons might walk a few steps along to arrive via the hotel entrance that was festooned with tasteful Christmas lights at the time of writing this review.

The Melody Restaurant is situated within the St Paul’s Hotel that started life as part of St Paul’s School. This was designed by celebrated 19th-century architect Alfred Waterhouse who was responsible for producing the Natural History Museum.

Sweet treats

The harmony continues with the three-tiered selection of sweet and savoury treats that are placed on generously sized tables resplendent in crisp linen table cloths. Sandwiches and other delicious bites cover the first tier. Freshly-baked scones (light, warm and delectable) fill the second tier with a generous portion of tasty jam and clotted cream. The piece de resistance is the top tier that is festooned with a decadent selection of sweet treats including miniature cheesecakes and macaroons – although one might imagine the choices may periodically change. The pastry chef is to be warmly complimented on their hard work and attention to detail.

In terms of hot beverages, the choice is very agreeable with a selection of both loose leaf (much appreciated) and tea bags offering everything from fruit choices to a Breakfast Blend. The Melody also serves a very attractive and delicious hot chocolate in a long glass cup while a full range of coffee choices can also be expertly made. Everything is served in immaculate white crockery and is re-filled upon request by the staff. On this occasion the fabulous Chris and his colleagues looked after us with professionalism, politeness and punctuality. It was noted and appreciated that patrons are asked if they have any dietary requirements upon being presented with the menu.

Tea and Bubbles

Finally, it should be noted that patrons have a choice of St Paul’s Afternoon Tea (hot beverages only), a Champagne Afternoon Tea (one glass) or a Bottomless Champagne Afternoon Tea (for two hours). All are great value and competitively priced for a London restaurant. For a relaxed afternoon tea, superbly prepared and served in pleasant surroundings, just head to W10.
