Why not be adventurous and “explore the world of wine” to discover some great Christmas gift ideas? Here is my list of some splendid bottles (that I have really enjoyed tasting) that are guaranteed to fill hearts and glasses with gladness this Christmas.

A classic  blend of southern Rhone red grapes including  Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre, this Châteauneuf-du-pape delivers on all fronts. It is well balanced, powerful and juicy. The palate offers dark fruits laced with spice and pepper. Absolutely demands food, preferably beef or lamb. Alcohol: 15% ABV.

Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, South Africa
This bottle from a multi-award winning wine producer displays all the power and structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. It is an outstanding dry red wine showing flavours of chocolate, mint, subtle spices and structured tannins. Drink with rare roast beef or a bloody steak. Alcohol: 14.5% ABV.

This South African Bordeaux style red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and  Cabernet Franc grapes. A beautifully crafted medium bodied wine with fine integrated tannins. It over-delivers on price and is one of my absolute favourite wines. Alcohol:14% ABV.

KEN FORRESTER CROPPEDKen Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc 2013, Stellenbosch, South Africa
This full bodied white wine from Ken Forrester, the acclaimed ‘Master of Chenin Blanc’, has great density and complexity with floral notes, grapefruit and spice on the long, creamy palate.  This wine is refreshing for hot weather and is a perfect partner for spicy chicken dishes,  seafood and full-flavoured fish.  Alcohol:14% ABV.

Circle of Life CROPPED Waterkloof Circle of Life White 2011, Stellenbosch, South Africa
This off-dry blend of sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and semillon has inviting flavours of lemon, vanilla and honey and is beautifully complex . Sweet and silky in the mouth it offers lovely richness and sound acidity. An outstanding and unique wine. Alcohol:14% ABV.
