Sushi at Thai Kani*

Thai Kani
Thai Kani Restaurant

Thai Kani is located in a quiet street off Kahama Road in Masaki. Since opening its doors in 2013, it’s Thai and Japanese cuisines have become a great addition to the city’s restaurant scene. (*this restaurant has now relocated)The eatery has a small indoor seating area and pleasant outdoor covers on raised decking under makuti roofing. You will find the staff helpful while the owner or manager are always at hand to advise on the menu and will even arrange a certain variation to a dish on the menu. The ambiance is casual and relaxed with subdued lighting and low background music.

I have been to Thai Kani several times, and have chosen to review their two cuisine styles in separate posts. First off, the wide selection of nigiri, sushi rolls, tempura, temaki rolls, sashimi and sashimi salad on the Japanese menu. You are simply spoilt for choice.

Before proceeding, allow me to gush a little about sushi. It is something that hits every taste bud perfectly! Sweet, savoury, bitter, salty and spicy. Let me say, as a foodie it is an experience you want to repeat endlessly!

Thai Kani manages to provide a good sushi experience and then some…with the popular sushi rolls of California (cucumber, crab meat & avocado), prawn tempura sushi roll plus the vegetarian option of avocado and cucumber sushi roll. I love the raw fish sushi rolls of salmon and spicy red snapper. But the star sushi roll at this eatery, however, is definitely the spicy tuna crispy rice sushi roll. I assume pan-frying makes it crusty and golden on the outside. It’s then generously topped with the spicy, fresh tuna which is ‘almost cooked’ by the tangy, spicy lime dressing. To finish off, it is sprinkled with toasted black sesame seeds and sliced chillies. A dinner at Thai Kani will not be complete without this treat.

If you are open to eating raw fish, sashimi salad is another top choice: mixed, bite-sized pieces of raw fish served on a bed of green salad. The tuna, red snapper and prawns are marinated in a tangy, lime dressing. Such fresh seafood is one of the great treats for foodies on the Swahili Coast.
