Danielle Coetsee: Creating Brilliant South African Sparkling Wine at Boschendal

South African Cap Classique (sparkling wine) is poised to achieve even greater international acclaim thanks to a talented cohort of winemakers like Danielle Coetsee (née Jacobs) from the renowned Boshendal winery in the Western Cape.

“This year we are celebrating 40 years of making Cap Classique,” says 27-year old winemaker Danielle Coetsee who tasked with making the estate’s bottle-fermented sparkling wines, popularly known as “MCC” in South Africa, that is made according to the traditional method (Méthode Champenoise) most famously used in the French region of Champagne.

Wine tasting at Plaisir de Merle

Pl de M 1Cape Town Series: One of the highlights of my visit to the Cape Winelands was a visit to one of the most incredibly picturesque and renowned estates of this remarkable wine country.  The great Plaisir de Merle vineyards, that wrap majestically around the dramatic Simonsberg Mountain, can trace its origins to the late 17th century. It was a real delight to sit down with Jacques Erasmus, Spier’s talented white wine maker, beneath the imposing Heath Nash chandelier — made from 334 recycled Spier wine bottles and weighing 370kgs — which hangs above the tasting area of the Wine Farm in Stellenbosch. (more…)
